The word "Baan Baan" is an Aboriginal word that means "grass". It was used by H. Herbert in 1846 when he leased the pastoral run that included the springs, and the name "Baan Baan Springs" comes from this. Herbert is thought to have borrowed the word from the local Wakka Wakka and/or Kabi Kabi languages.
